Power/Prog Metal from Portugal!

The embryo of what came to be Fantasy Opus started in 1998 when two school friends that played guitar, Marcos and Daniel, started to jam on weekends. After a while, the two fiends were making songs and soon after, they found a drummer – Pajo – through an add. On weekends, the trio rehearsed and developed the songs, and collectively prepared to record a demo, with Daniel taking care of the vocals – tt that time, the band name was Black Thunder.

After a few twists and turns in the line-up and in the type of elements incorporated in the music, Marcos and Pajo teamed up with Luis Guerreiro(V) and Luis Augusto(B) to record the demo in 2001. At time of recording, the band also changes it’s name to Fantasy Opus and releases an homonymous demo featuring 3 tracks, that raised a few eyebrows in the Portuguese metal scene.

After several twists and turns in the line-up once again, the band develops new songs and sets to record the debut album without a permanent singer. In April 2004, the Fantasy Opus line-up comprised of Marcos Carvalho (G), Nilson Santagueda (B), Pajo (D) and Iuri Conceicao (K), recorded all the instrumental tracks that were part of “Beyond Eternity”. Finding a permanent singer in the Portuguese metal scene proved to be very difficult, but the band endured, and in 2007, Pedro Arroja(V) joined to complete the album, which ws officially lunched in 2009.

The band proceeded to promote the album in several venues in Portugal both as a headliner as well as opening for International acts, building a considerable following in the Portuguese metal scene. The album had some very positive reviews from international websites, that brought a few more fans outside the Portuguese metal scene, and was able to sell a few hundred copies in Japan alone.

Finally after several changes in line-up and personal issues within the band, Fantasy Opus, now comprised of Leonel Silva (V), Marcos Carvalho (LG), Ruben Reis (RG), Nilson Santagueda(B) and Ricardo Allonzo (D), returned to the writing process, culminating in the band entering the studio to record their second album.

The 11 track sophomore album “The Last Dream”. launched in 2018, is a huge step up in terms of writing and production – It features several special guests and incorporates new musical elements in the sound of the band to make this second Opus as good as it could ever be. It also contains an Epic called “The Last Dream” which starts as a near death experience told through a conceptual story told by its 6 tracks until the ultimate death of its main character, in his sleep.
